Separation Anxiety

June 14, 2010

In the Garden of Eden, God put the man to sleep and divided him by taking his rib. The man, it could be reasoned, was less than he was before – he had fewer constituent parts than he had before the God-induced death. Fear of having less, of giving something that we consider essential (such as body parts!), is often the source of great anxiety.

But consider what happens next. God returns what he had taken from the man in a form that was far more glorious than the little hunk of bone. It was nothing other than a whole other person – one who would help him and be his companion and satisfy him. God had given the man more than he had taken, more than the man could have hoped.

Be anxious for nothing.
