Liturgy – Foreign and Domestic

September 21, 2010

In the Baptist world, liturgy is a four-letter word. “We will have none of that stiff formalism here, pal!” But just now I have been flipping through the Baptist Hymnal, and have discovered a section of Service Music. (Service music, as a category, is elementarily liturgical.) There are benedictions, Trinitarian doxologies, and three-fold amens.

It may be a foreign concept in today’s relevance-driven church world, but it seems that it is a part of Baptist domestic history. It just seems to have been forgotten.
